What does it mean to be physically active?

Being physically active and exercising regularly are important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and living well.

Being active does not mean that you have to engage in gym sessions or gruelling work-out regimes. Participating in just 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on at least five days of the week is sufficient for you to reap the benefits of an active lifestyle.

Moderate intensity physical activity is an activity that causes your heart rate and breathing rate to increase. It can be relatively easy to incorporate this type of activity into everyday life. For example, brisk walking, cycling, gardening, swimming or even walking up stairs are all examples of activities that will count toward your 30 minutes.

How can physical activity benefit me?

Becoming physically active and exercising regularly can help you to live a healthier, happier and longer life. It can help you to improve your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reduce your risk of heart disease and stroke, and reduce your risk of developing chronic diseases including type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. It can also help to improve your emotional wellbeing by helping you to feel more relaxed and happier, which will support you in living well.

How can I become more physically active?

There are many ways for you to become more physically active and incorporate exercise into your daily routine. The good news is that it is never too late for you to start. There are a huge range of activities to choose from, which means that you can always find something to suit your interests. Please see our Event Finder to find suitable activities that are local to you.

Most importantly, physical activity is accessible to everyone. Any person of any size, age or fitness level can improve their health by becoming more active. In fact, those of you who are less active initially are the people who are most likely to feel the biggest benefits.

You may like to keep a track of how much physical activity you are doing by using our physical activity tool and keeping a weekly log:
